Paul McCartney’s “silent” track becomes a voice of protest against AI
Paul McCartney has released his first new recording in five years — an almost completely silent track created as a gesture of protest against the use of artists’ work by artificial intelligence without their permission. The recording, which features only light tape hiss and a few incidental studio sounds, appears on the B-side of the upcoming vinyl release Is This What We Want?. The project brings together musicians and composers who condemn the practice of technology companies training their AI models on copyright-protected works. The organisers of the protest urge the UK government not to introduce legal changes that would allow corporations to use music, lyrics and other creative materials without the consent of authors and without paying royalties. Alongside McCartney, artists such as Sam Fender, Kate Bush, Hans Zimmer and the Pet Shop Boys have joined the initiative. The tracklist of the record forms a clear message: “The British government must not legalise music theft for the benefit of AI companies.” McCartney, currently touring North America, has repeatedly warned about the risks AI poses to future generations of musicians. At the same time, the music sector expresses concern over pressure on the UK government from Donald Trump’s administration, which opposes strict regulation in the field of artificial intelligence. The UK government says it is seeking a balance between the interests of the creative economy and those of major tech companies, but new legislation regulating AI and copyright is not expected before 2026.
