‘NAZA’ in Venice: Gaza documentary sets festival record for longest standing ovation
NAZA, a documentary by Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, received a 25-minute standing ovation following its world premiere in the main competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival — the longest in the festival’s history. Audiences rose to their feet as the filmmakers were applauded, with Palestinian flags appearing in the auditorium. Abraham and Szor were visibly moved and in tears. The previous record was held by The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, which received a 23-minute ovation at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.
The film is based on testimony from 24 former Israeli military personnel and intelligence officers. Their faces are concealed and their voices altered as they describe surveillance systems, algorithms and the mechanisms used to select targets in Gaza. According to the filmmakers, the title NAZA derives from a military term referring to the anticipated number of civilian casualties resulting from a strike. The film was made over several years and builds on journalistic investigations published by The Guardian, +972 Magazine and the Israeli publication Local Call. The Venice festival describes the film as an examination of the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians.
The critical response has been overwhelmingly strong, although not unanimous. John Bleasdale of Time Out awarded the film five stars, describing it as one of the most important films of the year and praising its combination of journalistic precision and cinematic restraint. The Guardian called NAZA a disturbing examination of modern warfare and responsibility, while the Financial Times described it as one of the most notable films at this year’s Venice festival.
Some critics, however, have pointed to the film’s limitations. Pia Oveerk of The Phrase Maker acknowledged that the anonymity of the interviewees is understandable on security grounds, but argued that it creates an additional distance between the audience and the subjects, while also leaving questions about how some of the testimonies can be independently verified. NAZA is Abraham and Szor’s second collaboration following No Other Land, their documentary about Palestinian life in Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2025.
The new documentary was filmed largely at night on rooftops in Tel Aviv, where anonymous interviewees describe their involvement in systems used to select targets and carry out air strikes. The producers include The Guardian and James Wilson, while Jonathan Glazer, director of The Zone of Interest, serves as executive producer. According to the filmmakers, their aim this time was not simply to extend the journalistic investigation, but to allow audiences to hear directly from the people who developed and operated the systems at the centre of the film.
