Isabella Rossellini honoured at the opening of the Locarno Film Festival
The 79th Locarno Film Festival opened on the Piazza Grande with a tribute to Isabella Rossellini, the actor, director and one of the most distinctive figures in European and American cinema of recent decades. The honour also carried a personal significance for Rossellini. Her father, Roberto Rossellini, one of the founding figures of Italian neorealism, became part of the festival’s history as early as 1948, when his film Germany, Year Zero (Germania anno zero) won Locarno’s top prize, then known as the Grand Prix and later succeeded by the Golden Leopard. Isabella Rossellini was born in Rome in 1952 to Roberto Rossellini and the Swedish actor Ingrid Bergman. Her own career, however, long ago moved beyond the weight of a celebrated family name. She first worked as a journalist and model before establishing herself as an international film star. One of the defining roles of her career came in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), in which she played Dorothy Vallens. The performance cemented Rossellini’s reputation as an actor willing to take on daring and psychologically demanding roles. She later worked with Lynch again on Wild at Heart, and also appeared in films by Robert Zemeckis, James Gray, the Taviani brothers, Guy Maddin, Marjane Satrapi and others. Recent years have brought Rossellini a renewed wave of acclaim. She appeared in Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera, while her performance as Sister Agnes in Edward Berger’s political thriller Conclave earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Another strand of Rossellini’s work reflects her long-standing interest in ethology, the study of animal behaviour. She created the deliberately theatrical short-film series Green Porno, Seduce Me and Mammas, using humour to explore mating, courtship and maternal behaviour across different species. Locarno included a selection of these films in the programme devoted to her, presenting Rossellini not only as a performer but also as an artist with a distinctive and often eccentric creative voice.
Founded in 1946, shortly after the end of the Second World War, the Locarno Film Festival has grown into one of the world’s oldest international film festivals and an important platform for independent and auteur cinema. Its main award, the Pardo d’Oro, or Golden Leopard, has over the decades recognised filmmakers and films that often went on to gain wider international attention after their premieres in Locarno. One of the festival’s defining features is its openness to a broad public. Each evening, the central Piazza Grande is transformed into a vast open-air cinema, with one of the largest screens in Europe and space for up to 8,000 spectators. This year’s festival runs from 5 to 15 August.
