Faceless Infant Jesus Disappears from Brussels Nativity Scene: Theft or Protest?
Brussels police are investigating the disappearance of an infant Jesus figure from a Nativity scene at the city’s main Christmas market — an installation that has already sparked nationwide controversy over its unconventional artistic design. The new display was created by German artist Victoria-Maria Geyer. In her concept, the faces of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, and the Wise Men are made from patchworks of cloth without distinct features, while the animals have clearly defined expressions. Geyer, a practising Catholic, said the faceless figures were intended to give the scene a sense of universality and inclusivity, allowing “every Catholic, regardless of their background, to recognise themselves” in the Biblical story. The project replaced a traditional Nativity scene that had stood on the Grand-Place for 25 years. The market organiser, Brussels Major Events, said it was time to “rethink” the format, and the design was approved by both the City of Brussels and the local Catholic Church. Public reaction, however, has been sharply divided. Georges-Louis Bouchez, leader of the centre-right Reformist Movement (MR), criticised the installation, arguing that the faceless figures “do not convey the spirit of Christmas” and resemble “zombies one might find near Brussels train stations.” He launched a petition calling for the return of a traditional Nativity scene. Meanwhile, fellow MR member Michel De Maegd acknowledged that the design “lacks sensitivity,” but condemned the use of the controversy as a political tool. The installation’s cost — around €65,000 for a structure intended to last five years — has further fuelled debate, with critics calling the amount excessive. The infant Jesus figure has since been replaced with a new model. Organisers say they will monitor the installation more closely but do not plan to introduce additional security measures.
