From July 10 to 15, the small Portuguese town of Freamunde transforms into the vibrant stage for one of the country’s most colourful festivals — Sebastianas, held in honour of Saint Sebastian, the protector invoked during times of famine, disease, and war. Over 120,000 visitors from across Portugal gather to experience the dynamic energy of this event, where centuries-old religious devotion meets the electric spirit of a popular street carnival. The festival’s origins run deep: according to local lore, it dates back to the 15th century, centred around a chapel once dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Despite long interruptions and strict ecclesiastical bans during the Second World War, Sebastianas made a strong comeback — and today, every second week of July, it unfolds in full force. The programme is as diverse as it is dazzling. Each day brings live performances from stars of the Portuguese music scene, renowned DJs, orchestras, and local bands. Friday features the famous Night of Bombos, where dozens of drum groups roam the streets, energising the crowds with their rhythmic pulse. On Monday, the allegorical parade and Marcha Luminosa light up the town — a spectacle of fantasy, colour, and sound with handcrafted floats built by local artisans. The spiritual heart of the celebration comes on Sunday with a festive mass and solemn procession, where the streets are covered in a symbolic carpet of brightly painted wooden ribbons — a unique, hand-laid path in honour of the saint. Yet the most eagerly awaited attraction remains the iconic Vaca de Fogo — the Fire Cow. This pyrotechnic sculpture storms through the crowd nightly in a blaze of sparks and fireworks. Alongside the spectacular firework finales — now known nationally as a Freamunde-style ending — it caps off each night of the celebration with unforgettable flair. Sebastianas is not only a tribute to the past — it’s living proof of how deep-rooted tradition can evolve into a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and emotion.
