На кампусі Єльського університету у Нью-Гейвені відбувся симпозіум, присвячений видатному литовському художнику та композитору Мікалоюсу Константінасу Чюрльонісу — однієї з найвизначніших постатей мистецької історії Балтії. Захід став однією з ключових міжнародних подій, якими Литва відзначає ювілей митця у 2025 році. Протягом дня науковці, куратори, музикологи та сучасні митці з Литви, США та кількох європейських країн обговорювали унікальність творчої мови Чюрльоніса — митця, який працював на межі мистецтв, поєднуючи живописні цикли зі структурою музичних сонат і формуючи авторське бачення часу, ритму та простору. Серед учасників були провідні дослідники його творчості, а також сучасні художники та композитори, які працюють у діалозі з його ідеями. Особливий інтерес викликали виступи про філософські аспекти його робіт, приховані символи та криптографію у музичних композиціях, а також аналіз того, як його спадщина впливає на литовський та міжнародний виконавський канон сьогодні. У межах симпозіуму відбувся прем’єрний показ короткого фільму «Sofija» режисерки Емілії Шкарнуліте, створеного спеціально до ювілею Чюрльоніса, а завершила програму концертна частина, де прозвучала його музика у виконанні Haven String Quartet та піаніста Андрюса Жлабіса. Ювілей Чюрльоніса став нагодою для масштабного міжнародного переосмислення його ролі у світовій культурі. Литовські інституції підкреслюють, що 2025 рік — це можливість представити Чюрльоніса як творця, що випередив свій час: автора візуальних циклів, які нагадують кінематограф, та музики, яку сучасники дедалі частіше читають через призму нових культурних контекстів.
A symposium dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Mikalojus Ciurlionis was held in the United States
A symposium celebrating the life and work of the renowned Lithuanian painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, one of the most important figures in the cultural history of the Baltic region, took place on the campus of Yale University in New Haven. The event became one of the key international occasions through which Lithuania is marking the artist’s jubilee in 2025. Throughout the day, scholars, curators, musicologists, and contemporary artists from Lithuania, the United States, and several European countries discussed the uniqueness of Ciurlionis’s artistic language — that of a creator who worked at the intersection of the arts, combining cycles of paintings with the structure of musical sonatas, shaping his own vision of time, rhythm, and space. Among the participants were leading researchers of his work, as well as contemporary artists and composers who engage in dialogue with his ideas. Particular interest was drawn by presentations on the philosophical dimensions of his art, the hidden symbols and cryptography in his musical compositions, and analyses of how his legacy continues to influence Lithuanian and international performance practices today. The symposium also featured the premiere screening of the short film “Sofija” by director Emilija Skarnulyte, created especially for Ciurlionis’s anniversary. The program concluded with a concert performance featuring his music, interpreted by the Haven String Quartet and pianist Andrius Zlabys. Ciurlionis’s jubilee has become an occasion for a broad international reexamination of his role in global culture. Lithuanian institutions emphasize that 2025 offers an opportunity to present Ciurlionis as an artist ahead of his time — the creator of visual cycles that anticipate cinema and of music that today’s audiences increasingly interpret through new cultural perspectives.
