The Flanders Festival Ghent has cancelled a planned performance by the Munich Philharmonic, scheduled for September 18, citing the involvement of conductor Lahav Shani. Organizers explained their decision by pointing to “insufficient clarity” regarding the musician’s stance on the policies of the Israeli government amid the war in Gaza. Lahav Shani is the music director of the Israel Philharmonic and is set to become the next chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic. Despite his public calls for peace, organizers argued that this was not enough to demonstrate a clear distance from the actions of the Israeli government. The cancellation provoked a strong backlash. Germany condemned the move, describing it as a cultural boycott and an act of antisemitism. Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer stated that the matter would be raised at the EU level. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, meanwhile, attended a Munich Philharmonic concert in Germany under Shani’s direction as a gesture of support. However, the decision has divided Belgian politics: some emphasize the importance of protecting artistic freedom, while others insist that ethical and political considerations cannot be ignored. What began as a cultural dispute in Ghent has now escalated into an international diplomatic controversy, once again underscoring the profound impact of the Middle East conflict on European society and the arts.
