Папа Лев XIV відкрив у Ватиканській апостольській бібліотеці масштабний мистецький проєкт AQVA — першу виставку нового п’ятирічного циклу Catastrophe and Wonder («Катастрофа і диво»). Artist JR Turns the Vatican Apostolic Library into a Stage for Contemporary Art
Pope Leo XIV has inaugurated AQVA, a major artistic project at the Vatican Apostolic Library and the first exhibition in the new five-year cycle Catastrophe and Wonder. At its centre is Diluvium, a monumental installation by French artist JR: a black-and-white wave stretching nearly 70 metres in length and rising 13 metres high appears to engulf the library’s historic façade, transforming one of the world’s oldest repositories of knowledge into a striking setting for contemporary art.
The exhibition has emerged as one of Italy’s defining cultural events of the autumn. Rather than presenting a conventional museum display, AQVA explores water as a symbol of memory, destruction and renewal, bringing together medieval manuscripts, historic maps, contemporary photography and multimedia installations. Italian outlets including ANSA, la Repubblica and Vatican News have described the project as a compelling new dialogue between contemporary artistic practice and the Vatican’s cultural heritage.

JR (Jean René, born 1983) is a French artist and photographer widely regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary street art. Working at the intersection of photography and public art, he creates monumental black-and-white installations on building façades, bridges and within museum spaces. JR gained international recognition through projects including Portrait of a Generation, Face 2 Face, Women Are Heroes and the global Inside Out Project, which has engaged millions of participants across more than 150 countries. In 2026, he created Diluvium—the first site-specific installation ever conceived for the façade of the Vatican Apostolic Library and the landmark work of the AQVA exhibition.
