Iceland’s National Horse Competition — the event the whole nation awaits
Every two years, Iceland becomes the epicentre of one of its most anticipated national events — Landsmot hestamanna, the National Horse Competition. Far more than a sporting spectacle, this week-long celebration is a vibrant festival of horsemanship, cultural identity and centuries-old tradition. Held in different regions of the country, typically in July, Landsmot transforms scenic Icelandic landscapes into lively arenas where the nation’s finest riders and most noble horses compete. The event was first held in 1950, initiated by the Icelandic Equestrian Association (Landssamband hestamannafelaga), which continues to organise the competition in partnership with the Icelandic Horse Association. At the heart of Landsmot stands the Icelandic horse, a true symbol of national heritage. Despite their modest size, these horses are known for their endurance, muscular build and distinctive gaits, including the smooth four-beat tolt and the fast, rhythmical flugskeid. Thanks to strict breeding regulations, the breed has remained genetically pure for over a thousand years, and only the most exceptional horses earn their place in the Landsmot arena. Riders travel from every corner of Iceland to take part, alongside members of the Icelandic diaspora from countries such as Germany, the United States and Denmark. But Landsmot is more than a competition — it is a cultural gathering. The event features concerts, markets, exhibitions and family reunions, creating an atmosphere of celebration and connection. For Icelanders, Landsmot is not simply a horse show — it is a living tradition. The Icelandic horse has been part of daily life since the island’s settlement in the 9th century. Reverence for the horse is woven into the nation’s collective memory and pride. Landsmot is where past and present meet, in the rhythm of hooves, the shimmer of manes and the silent bond between human and horse.
