У Греції завершили перший етап масштабного очищення університетських реєстрів: з обліку виключили 308 605 неактивних студентів. Це рішення майже вдвічі скоротило офіційну кількість студентів у країні та стало одним із найрадикальніших кроків реформування системи вищої освіти за останні десятиліття. Процедуру завершили 31 грудня 2025 року. Вона стосувалася студентів, зарахованих до чотирирічних програм до 2017 року, які не відповідали вимогам для продовження навчання. Водночас реформа триває: у найближчі роки очікується друга хвиля виключень, що охопить п’яти- та шестирічні програми, зокрема політехнічні й аграрні факультети. За попередніми оцінками, кількість таких випадків може перевищити 80 тисяч, а остаточні рішення заплановані на кінець 2026 року. Держава також передбачила «другу спробу»: близько 35 тисяч студентів зберегли статус завдяки перехідній нормі для тих, хто поєднував навчання з роботою або перебував у складних життєвих обставинах. У Міністерстві освіти наголошують, що збереження неактивних студентів у реєстрах роками шкодило прозорості та плануванню. Оновлення списків має підвищити ефективність управління, фінансування й академічного життя та наблизити грецькі університети до європейських стандартів. Влада визнає реформу болісною, але необхідною, підкреслюючи: студентський статус не може бути безстроковим, а диплом має відображати реальні зусилля й досягнення.
More than 300,000 inactive students removed from Greek university registers
Greece has completed the first stage of a large-scale clean-up of university registers, removing 308,605 inactive students. The move has almost halved the country’s official student population and represents one of the most far-reaching reforms of the Greek higher education system in recent decades. The process was finalised on 31 December 2025 and concerned students enrolled in four-year degree programmes before 2017 who did not meet the requirements to continue their studies. The reform is ongoing: a second wave of removals is expected in the coming years and will affect five- and six-year programmes, particularly at polytechnic and agricultural faculties. According to preliminary estimates, the number of such cases could exceed 80,000, with final decisions scheduled for the end of 2026. At the same time, the state has provided a “second chance”. Around 35,000 students have retained their status thanks to a transitional provision aimed at those who combined studies with work or faced difficult life circumstances. The Ministry of Education argues that keeping inactive students on university registers for years undermined transparency and effective planning. Updating the lists is intended to improve governance, funding and academic life, while bringing Greek universities closer to standards applied across most European countries. The authorities describe the reform as painful but necessary, stressing that student status cannot be indefinite and that a degree should reflect genuine effort and academic achievement.
