Thousands of tourists were left stranded in northern Finland after flights from Kittilä Airport in Lapland were cancelled. The reason was extreme cold: morning temperatures dropped to −37°C, making aircraft de-icing and safe flight operations impossible, Finnish media report. According to the national broadcaster Yle, the spell of severe cold has already lasted several days, and forecasts by the Finnish Meteorological Institute indicate that temperatures in the region could fall to nearly −40°C on Monday. Kittilä Airport is located in a sparsely populated part of Finnish Lapland, a popular tourist destination. Finns are generally accustomed to harsh winter conditions, but this year the cold has proved significantly more severe than usual, affecting not only the north of the country but also central and eastern parts of Europe. Finnish outlets note that such temperatures in Lapland are rare even for this region and pose serious challenges for transport infrastructure and the tourism industry. Finnish newspapers and online portals point out that a large share of passengers in Kittilä are foreign tourists who travelled to Lapland’s winter resorts and “Christmas” attractions. Some were forced to spend additional nights in hotels or seek alternative routes via southern airports. At the same time, Finnish commentators say the current cold wave has once again reignited debate about the resilience of infrastructure to climatic extremes. On social media, users are sharing photos of thermometers and joking about a “real winter”, while also discussing whether transport services and airports are prepared for increasingly frequent weather anomalies. The extreme weather has also affected other European countries: heavy snowfall, strong winds and icy conditions have made travel difficult in Germany and the Baltic states.
