За словами драматурга Юкки Гейнянена, унікальність проєкту ще й у тому, що він руйнує звичну дистанцію між театром і містом. «У театрі легко опинитися на власному острівці мистецького світу. Ця концепція приводить на сцену багато звичайних жителів Оулу й провітрює нашу бульбашку», — пояснив він Yle. Самі режисери відзначили особливо сильний зв’язок мешканців Оулу з природою і припустили, що концепцію було б цікаво повторити взимку, аби побачити, як зміниться відчуття міста в іншу пору року.
One Hundred Oulu Residents Become the City’s “Living Statistics”
A documentary theatre production titled 100% Oulu has premiered in the Finnish city of Oulu, bringing one hundred ordinary residents on stage without fictional roles. They answer questions about political views, rising prices, their relationship with nature, personal fears, infidelity and other aspects of everyday life, creating a living portrait of the city. The participants were selected to reflect Oulu’s demographic profile as closely as possible; symbolically, each represents one per cent of the population.
Oulu is the largest city in northern Finland, on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. Known as a major university and technology hub, it holds the title of European Capital of Culture in 2026. The production forms part of the Oulu2026 programme and marks the Finnish debut of 100% City, an international project by the Berlin-based theatre collective Rimini Protokoll that has already been staged in more than 40 cities worldwide. Directors Helgard Haug and Daniel Wetzel describe the format as a “human mirror” of the city: “Who are my neighbours and the people I pass by chance in the street? What have they experienced, and what are their feelings, hopes, joys and concerns?”
According to dramaturg Jukka Heinänen, the project’s distinctive strength lies in breaking down the usual distance between theatre and the city around it. “In theatre, it is easy to end up on our own little island within the art world. This concept brings a large number of ordinary Oulu residents on stage and lets some fresh air into our bubble,” he told Yle. The directors have also highlighted the unusually strong connection Oulu residents have with nature and suggested that the concept could be revisited in winter to see how the city’s sense of itself might change with the season.
