З 20 до 23 серпня у Данії, в місті Гумлебек (Humlebæk), приблизно за 35 км на північ від Копенгагена, у Louisiana Museum of Modern Art проходить міжнародний літературний фестиваль Louisiana Literature 2026. Музей, розташований на узбережжі протоки Ересунн, на кілька днів перетворюється на один із головних майданчиків європейської літературної дискусії: зустрічі з письменниками, читання та розмови відбуваються у музейних залах, Скульптурному парку та просто неба. Фестиваль започаткували у 2010 році, однак його передісторія пов’язана з багаторічною традицією Louisiana Museum як простору для літератури й суспільних дискусій. Ще у 1980-х музей приймав східноєвропейських дисидентів, а 1992 року саме тут Салман Рушді вперше публічно з’явився після оголошення фетви. Відтоді Louisiana Literature став важливим місцем зустрічі данської та міжнародної літературних спільнот. Серед його учасників у різні роки були Маргарет Етвуд, Пол Остер, Харукі Муракамі, Світлана Алексієвич та Ольга Токарчук.
Від багатьох інших літературних фестивалів Європи Louisiana Literature відрізняється самим форматом і місцем проведення: це не традиційний книжковий ярмарок чи конференція, а поєднання літератури, сучасного мистецтва, архітектури й ландшафту. Відвідувачі переходять від письменницької дискусії до виставки, від читання — до прогулянки серед скульптур із видом на Ересунн. Саме ця інтеграція літератури з музейним простором і природою робить фестиваль однією з найхарактерніших культурних подій Данії та вирізняє його серед подібних заходів у ЄС.
Between Text, Art and the Sea: Louisiana Literature in Denmark
From 20 to 23 August, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, around 35 kilometres north of Copenhagen, hosts the international literary festival Louisiana Literature 2026. Located on the coast of the Øresund, the museum becomes one of the key venues for European literary debate for several days, with author talks, readings and conversations taking place in the galleries, the Sculpture Park and outdoors. Among the leading guests in 2026 are Siri Hustvedt, Kiran Desai, Georgi Gospodinov, Katie Kitamura, Kae Tempest, Douglas Stuart, Elizabeth Strout, Antonio Scurati, Leïla Slimani, David Szalay, Vincenzo Latronico and Tanya Tagaq.
The festival was launched in 2010, although its origins lie in the Louisiana Museum’s long-standing tradition as a space for literature and public debate. In the 1980s, the museum hosted Eastern European dissidents, and in 1992 Salman Rushdie made his first public appearance there after the fatwa was issued against him. Since then, Louisiana Literature has become an important meeting point for Danish and international literary communities. Previous participants have included Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, Haruki Murakami, Svetlana Alexievich and Olga Tokarczuk.
What sets Louisiana Literature apart from many other literary festivals in Europe is its format and setting. Rather than a conventional book fair or conference, it brings together literature, contemporary art, architecture and landscape. Visitors can move from an author discussion to an exhibition, or from a reading to a walk among sculptures overlooking the Øresund. It is this integration of literature with the museum environment and the surrounding landscape that makes the festival one of Denmark’s most distinctive cultural events and sets it apart from similar events elsewhere in the EU.
