CELEBRATE 2.0 – Two Decades of STEAM-Powered Inspiration

European Researchers’ Night in Cyprus draws more than 5,000 visitors

The anniversary edition of European Researchers’ Night in Nicosia, marking its 20th year, drew more than 5,000 visitors, including over 2,000 schoolchildren. Organised by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), the event featured more than 75 exhibition stands and 80 activities, ranging from experiments and scientific demonstrations to simulations, quizzes, games and hands-on workshops. Children were encouraged to do more than simply listen: they could conduct experiments themselves, handle scientific equipment, take part in challenges, join a Treasure Hunt, use digital applications, build models, draw and make things.

This year’s CELEBRATE 2.0 – Two Decades of STEAM-Powered Inspiration programme brought together science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. Many activities were built around things children could see, test and understand for themselves. Researchers from the PHAETHON Centre of Excellence, for example, demonstrated how solar-energy technologies work, allowing pupils to interact with equipment, ask questions and see at first hand how technologies that rarely feature in the classroom operate. At another stand, the Karaiskakio Foundation explored bone-marrow and organ transplantation through the message “Become a donor – give the gift of life”, connecting complex medical research with a tangible human story. Quizzes, simulations and interactive games were also available for children and families.

Schoolchildren were not only participants but also became science communicators themselves. As part of Science Unfold 2026, they chose an invention or technology that had changed everyday life and had three minutes to explain it to a jury and the public in a clear and creative way. The format required them to go beyond memorising facts and understand an idea well enough to explain it in their own words. Cyprus Mail highlighted this approach, presenting Researchers’ Night as a way of taking science beyond academia and making it part of family and educational life.

Cyprus’s Researchers’ Night is part of a Europe-wide initiative launched by the European Commission in 2005. In 2026, events were held across 40 countries on 25 September. The Cypriot edition illustrates a broader shift in science communication: instead of simply presenting information on a display, organisers give children a challenge, an experiment or a game; instead of a lecture, they offer a chance to talk directly to a researcher; and instead of a ready-made answer, they encourage children to test an idea and explain what they have discovered. Science is thus presented not as a collection of complex terms, but as something that can be seen, explored, understood and shared.
