У You Don’t Belong Here

The 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival Through the Eyes of Leading Film Critics

The 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival emerged as a meeting point for several of the defining concerns of contemporary European cinema: historical memory, political unease, the discovery of new voices and an increasingly urgent conversation about the future of screen culture. In her festival round-up for The Film Verdict, Carmen Gray described this year’s edition as politically engaged and highlighted an unusually strong competition in which questions of power, resistance, cycles of violence and the persistence of the past repeatedly came to the fore. The festival opened with Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, which follows the writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika as they travel through post-war Germany in 1949, and closed with the world premiere of a restored version of Danis Tanović’s No Man’s Land, the tragicomic story of a Bosnian and a Serbian soldier trapped between enemy lines during the war.

At the same time, the Sarajevo Film Festival introduced Midnight Screenings for the first time, a strand devoted to regional films that deliberately challenge genre and formal conventions. Its CineLink industry platform also launched a new partnership with NEXT STEP STUDIO, an initiative of Cannes Critics’ Week, offering emerging filmmakers from the region another route towards international collaboration and greater visibility at Cannes. This year’s Talents Innovation Forum, meanwhile, turned its attention to the direction of cinematic sequences in video games, world-building, intellectual-property adaptation and AI-assisted workflows. Sarajevo therefore continues to place filmmakers from South-East Europe at the centre of its identity while also exploring new ways in which audiovisual stories are created, distributed and experienced.

Among the films that attracted particular critical attention, one of the festival’s discoveries was Kosara Mitić’s debut feature 17, which follows 17-year-old Sara after she witnesses the sexual assault of a friend during a school trip and joins her in trying to break through a culture of silence and everyday aggression. Writing in Screen International, Amber Wilkinson singled out newcomer Eva Kostić for the remarkable assurance of her performance; Kostić went on to win the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Actress, while the film itself collected several awards. The festival’s top prize went to Sandra Wollner’s Everytime, an enigmatic drama about a mother, a teenage girl and a boy bound together by tragedy who travel to Tenerife, where guilt, memory and the present gradually begin to blur. The jury described it as a story steeped in grief, while Cineuropa had already praised its visual and narrative boldness following its Cannes appearance. In Florin Șerban’s You Don’t Belong Here, for which Adrian Văncică won Best Actor, the apparently settled life of Marius, a doctor, begins to unravel when his son is suspected of murder; Wilkinson described the film as a tense, slow-burning exploration of toxic masculinity and the fraught relationship between father and son. The documentary selection also prompted reflections on memory and the legacies of conflict. Olivia Popp, writing for Cineuropa, highlighted Dragana Jurisic’s The Balkan Cowboy, a search for the traces of cult amateur western filmmaker Hari Džekson that also becomes an examination of how war transformed Bijeljina and the filmmaker herself. Veronika Orciari, also for Cineuropa, wrote about Milcho Manchevski’s Good People, an austere documentary portrait of survivors of the 2025 Pulse nightclub fire in Kočani and of the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy.
